In 2011 I embarked on a journey that would change my life forever ...
I took the White Belt Intensive Training to become a Nia Instructor. Little did I know 3 years later I would become a Medical Exercise Specialist working with individuals to manage their medical conditions through exercise and education. I love being able to help people change their lives while improving their experience of how they move and feel about their bodies.
I am not a super athlete, nor am I someone brimming over with energy who wants to exercise all the time - but I am passionate about people being healthy, standing tall, not being in pain and doing all those things they love to do!
Two big lessons for me were reallsing:
1. That as we age we have to keep moving ... and moving in ways that fill us up are the very best! Once we start to move and start to feel better, these positives become the catalyst to keep us moving more and moving forward!
2. All of us to a greater or lesser extent have poor posture; experiencing back and shoulder problems, weak cores. I know this firsthand from my 20 years of sitting at a computer as a graphic & web designer. A great concern for me is the younger generation and how the impact of hand held devices will have on their posture and health.
For the last 2 years I have been working primarily with an older demographic and know the importance of maintaining their independence. If I can work with someone to improve their strength, ability to move and function more fully, to feel good and do move in their daily lives - then I know I have done my job well. This brings joy and meaning into my life!
At 48 I am the fittest and strongest I have ever been - without exaggeration! I am doing more now than I ever have - and it feels great - especially when I can keep up with my 7 year old.
I look forward to sharing the beauty and joy of movement with you!
